Lowell, MA – As the start of a new school year approaches, five major bridges in Massachusetts – the Zakim Bridge and Longfellow Bridge in Boston, the Fore River Bridge in Quincy/Weymouth, the Burns Bridge in Worcester and the Cox Bridge in Lowell – will light up in blue in honor of Massachusetts’ Boys & Girls Clubs and the over 75,000 children and teens that they serve. In Lowell, John E. Cox Memorial Bridge on Bridge Street will illuminate in blue in the evening on Friday, September 1, 2023.
For over 120 years, Boys & Girls Clubs in Massachusetts have been providing safe and affordable out of school time programs for thousands of children. When school is out, the Boys & Girls Clubs are there to answer the call. As we head back to a new school year, Clubs will continue to serve the youth of our Commonwealth. The light on the bridges is a reflection of the light Clubs bring into our children’s lives every day.
The bridge lighting is part of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s bridge lighting initiative and the Lowell Waterways Vitality Initiative. We thank the Greater Lowell Community Foundation for supporting this initiative and our youth.
